The TGX Anniversary Edition - MAN celebrates ten years of Trucknology® Generation

The TGX range is known for its high degree of reliability: this is underscored by the extended power-train guarantee for four years and 600,000 kilometres included in the Anniversary Edition. Its XLX cab is equipped with sliding roof, coolbox, pre-heating and two sleeping bunks, making for comfortable driving, working and living. Driving ergonomics are also great, thanks to a highly comfortable driver's seat and multifunction steering wheel.

A decade from TGA to TGX 
In 2010, the MAN Trucknology® Generation can already look back on ten years of model history, which began with the launch of the MAN TGA in 2000. The new generation designed by Prof. Wolfgang Kraus increased the space in the cab by more than ten percent relative to its predecessor. The XXL cab remains convincing right up to the present day, providing more space than any other on the market. This was the beginning of a trend started by MAN, a striving towards optimal ergonomics for the driver. This has continued through to the current MAN TGX generation, which uses high-quality materials for the interior and optimises noise insulation. The TGA, recognised as "Truck of the Year 2001", was followed in 2007 by the new, independent TGX range, which itself was voted "Truck of the Year" in 2008. With its Trucknology Generation® MAN took over the trailblazing role, introducing trucks that could be driven and operated with the comfort of luxury passenger cars. The multifunction steering wheel was also a step towards more safety and ease of operation. It is available in all the Trucknology® ranges - the TGX, TGS and the light TGM and TGL.

The Trucknology® Generation led the way with its engines right from the start. In the D2876 common-rail diesel engine, MAN was the first manufacturer in the heavy-duty segment to launch the injection system with a central high-pressure injection pump on the market. The newly developed D20 common-rail and D26 common-rail engine generations succeeded the tried-and-trusted D28 and were also equipped from the beginning with electronically controlled high-pressure injection. Common-rail injection generates pressures of up to 1,800 bar and is capable of multiple injections during combustion. Its powerful electronic engine control unit adjusts injection to engine speed and load within milliseconds. This improves the engine's performance while reducing its consumption and emissions. Common-rail engines are also noticeably quieter, thanks to optimised combustion. Without this electronically controlled injection system it would not have been possible to achieve the values for consumption and emission that are standard today. The currently most stringent emission standard, EEV, is 60 percent lower than the Euro 3 NOx limit value at the time the Trucknology® Generation was launched, while the permissible EEV value for particulate is 80 percent lower. The range of outputs up to 680 hp available today wouldn't be possible without common-rail injection and turbocharging.

As far as active safety is concerned, the Trucknology® Generation brought with it pioneering technologies. A prime example is the then-new electronic braking system EBS, which reduces the response time of the wheel brakes and also manages the braking power of a trailer or semitrailer using coupling force control. This reduces the shortest braking distance of a forty-tonner at 80 km/h by around three metres compared with the previous generation. Xenon headlights and electronic safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, the lane guard system and continuous damping control were added as safety was continually improved in the course of the decade

Typical accident situations such as cornering too fast, slippery roads, emergency braking and hectic swerving can be defused by today's generation of vehicles with their electronic stability program ESP. It constantly monitors the dynamic state of the vehicle with its sensors and, if there is risk of skidding or tipping, intervenes in engine management as well as resorting to the brake system. Today, ESP is a standard feature onboard some of the TGX models, with MAN thus making a further contribution to more transport and road safety. ESP detects dangerous situations within milliseconds and reacts fast and reliably. The system increases traffic safety, in particular for vehicles with high centers of gravity such as transport mixers or tankers, for example. ESP operates not only on tractors but is also available for semitrailer combinations and articulated trains, where it brakes the semitrailer or trailer as well.
